Understanding The Golf Pivot Movement

The golf pivot is one of the most crucial movements in golf. In this video Chris Ryan gives you a behind the swing view and does an exceptional job at explaining the proper movements in your golf pivot.

The Golf Pivot Transcript

00:00

so today's topic is the pivot and more

00:01

specifically how you move your hips and

00:03

your pelvis in the back string and we're

00:05

going to show you the goal swing from a

00:06

slightly different view that you might

00:08

never seen before

00:10

[Music]

00:20

so thank you for joining me here at the

00:22

Forest of Arden today we're talking

00:23

about the pivot and more specifically

00:25

how the hips and the pelvis moving the

00:27

backswing something which I think can

00:29

help a lot and lots of golfers just for

00:31

we get started if you're new to my

00:32

channel I would love you to be part of

00:33

it there is a subscribe link down below

00:35

and there is a clickable link at the end

00:37

of the video if you would rather wait

00:38

for that so for many golfers improving

00:41

their pivot can really improve many

00:43

aspects of their game if you can get the

00:45

pivot moving better we often see the

00:47

Golf Club tracing around the body much

00:49

better and that can result in much more

00:51

solid shots I do spend a lot of time in

00:53

my day to day coaching improving how a

00:55

golfers body works and that very much

00:57

works on the ground up so we can get the

00:58

hips working we often see the upper body

01:00

on top of that working much better as

01:01

well so to really understand what

01:03

happens in the pivot we need to use a

01:05

camera angle which is maybe less used

01:08

and it should be when we're looking at

01:09

the golf swing and it's this camera here

01:11

so we're going to be looking at the golf

01:12

swing from behind him because it's a

01:14

much better place to see exactly what

01:17

those hips do and how they should move

01:19

in the golf swing we're specifically

01:20

looking at the tail bone which would be

01:23

around about here

01:24

and we're looking at the right hip and

01:25

how they function through the golf swing

01:27

so the first thing we're going to do is

01:28

I'm just going to stand here with seven

01:29

are just gonna hit a shot we're just

01:31

gonna have a look at it from that

01:32

different camera angle so this is just

01:35

me attempting to hit my kind of stock

01:37

standard 7-iron

01:51

and I'd be pretty happy with that it's

01:53

gone exactly where I wanted to strike

01:55

was good curve was pretty good and

01:58

that's for me a pretty good seventh line

02:00

so what did we see from this camera here

02:02

well when we play that back and we show

02:04

you what you will actually see is both

02:06

my tailbone and my right hip actually

02:08

would move towards the target in the

02:12

back team so they actually move towards

02:15

the target now if you look at my lead

02:18

hit my left hip that doesn't move

02:20

towards the target so it's not me kind

02:23

of slide in my hips towards a target

02:25

it's just that the way my pelvis works

02:27

in this rotation my hip and my tailbone

02:31

work towards the target part the reason

02:36

for that is because my hips are rotating

02:38

on this good angle my right leg is

02:40

starting to lose some flex my left leg

02:42

is starting to increase in some some

02:44

flex and what this really enables me to

02:46

do is in the second part of my backswing

02:48

it really enables me to kind of resend

02:50

to my weight and ultimately get my

02:52

weight about 80% into my lead side by

02:55

the time that my left arm is around

02:57

about halfway down about parallel with

02:59

the ground that's what we tend to see

03:00

from the elite golfers when the lead arm

03:02

is parallel to the ground they've got

03:04

about 80% weight into their trail side

03:06

how their hips working that back swing

03:08

in that transition phase plays a huge

03:11

role in that what do I tend to see from

03:13

a lot of golfers well I tend to see a

03:15

lot of golfers making a movement off the

03:16

ball this way and so from here becomes

03:20

incredibly difficult to get back onto

03:22

that lead side quickly enough we often

03:24

see they do that but it can be a little

03:25

bit too late so what I tend to find

03:29

really helps golfers is actually just

03:31

having that knowledge just appreciating

03:34

how those hips should move and what it

03:36

should look like from that behind view

03:37

because when you take your starting

03:39

position you can start to think about

03:41

this right hip moving in a few different

03:43

places it starts to move behind you it

03:46

starts to move upwards and it starts to

03:48

move towards the target so if I use this

03:50

golf club to represent my hips this

03:52

being my trail hip that's going to move

03:54

back up and towards the target that

03:58

helps me create these good pivot in my

04:00

lower body it helps me get my upper body

04:02

working much better above that

04:04

as we said a moment ago it helps me get

04:06

my weight left much earlier which helps

04:09

a lot of golfers and it helps we then

04:10

deliver the club to the ball in a much

04:13

more successful manner so using this

04:16

camera angle is not something that we

04:18

tend to do a lot we don't really look at

04:19

golf swings from this angle but we see

04:21

in a very very different way and there's

04:23

lots of things that we see from this

04:24

angle we don't generally see from the

04:25

kind of typical down the line based on

04:28

angles that we use before so improving

04:31

your pivot can be very simply a case of

04:33

appreciating what the movie should look

04:34

like and starting to think about how you

04:36

move your trail hip your tailbone in

04:39

that backswing definitely going to help

04:40

you transition better and hit those iron

04:42

shots much more crisply I always get

04:45

asked this question in the comments box

04:46

so this does apply for driver as well we

04:48

would just have Emily see a different

04:50

starting position we would generally see

04:51

a different upper body position but the

04:53

same movement in the pelvis would apply

04:54

to the driver hopefully that video helps

04:57

a different way of looking at the pivot

04:59

but one that might give you a different

05:00

view on it and maybe open your eyes to

05:02

what you should be doing in your

05:03

backswing to help you strike those irons

05:04

a little bit better thank you very much

05:06
