How Your Shoulders & Torso Rotate in The Golf Swing

Do you have the proper shoulder rotation? Are you rotating on the right plane to be a consistent golfer?

Well in this video Padraig Harrington gives us the "real" way to rotate the shoulders and how it can help golfers get open at impact. By the way Padraig's Tips on YouTube are pretty awesome!

How to Rotate Shoulders & Torso in Golf Swing Transcript

00:07

okay

00:08

into paddy's golf tips today we're going

00:10

to talk about how the torso

00:11

and the shoulders move in the golf swing

00:14

the winner of the gold medal

00:16

and the champion golfer of the year is

00:18

podrick harrington

00:40

[Music]

00:44

probably the first thing to understand

00:46

is in the golf swing after you take a

00:47

natural posture

00:48

again a natural posture is your arms

00:50

hanging we don't want to get too rigid

00:52

we certainly don't want to be hanging

00:53

out there the shoulders don't

00:55

turn horizontally or to the hips that

00:58

that's sometimes a lot of people

01:00

they're trying to turn their shoulders

01:01

this way the shoulders actually turn

01:04

in this matter so it's like a pulling

01:07

motion

01:07

so watch when i turn my shoulders so i'm

01:09

not trying to turn horizontally

01:11

i'm trying to turn them up so my right

01:13

shoulder is coming up my left down

01:16

now watch the structure when i turn okay

01:19

nice turn there now remember i've left

01:21

my hip go because if i kept my hip in

01:23

place i'd have a shoulder turn like that

01:24

which would be no use

01:26

most golfers want to get their shoulder

01:28

at least to the golf ball or a little

01:29

bit

01:30

to the right of it in their backswing so

01:31

watch i let my hip go

01:33

you can see my shoulder turn okay now

01:36

that shoulder turn if i actually bring

01:38

it back and show you the structure

01:40

that's where i am that's how much curve

01:42

and side bend i have at the top of the

01:44

backswing

01:44

so there so you can see that's so i

01:47

started in a position with a slight tilt

01:50

but i side bend so as i go around this

01:53

is dropping

01:54

under and it's curving this way so it's

01:57

curving all the way up here and even

01:58

more

01:59

as i get up higher towards my towards

02:02

underneath my armpit here

02:03

so again i'll show you i turn up and if

02:06

i turned around and showed you that

02:08

structure

02:08

that's how much it's been i've side

02:11

bended that much in the backswing

02:13

okay so remember don't turn

02:16

vertically with your hips or

02:18

horizontally with your hips or your

02:20

shoulders

02:20

it's a turn up your right hip goes up

02:23

your right shoulder goes up and you have

02:25

a little bit of

02:26

of side bend like so

02:29

and guess what as you move into your

02:32

left side

02:33

the shoulders and your your torso your

02:36

spine your back

02:38

moves down towards the target and from

02:40

here

02:41

it's very much the reverse so on the

02:44

back swing it's like starting along or

02:46

you pull the cable like so and then the

02:48

downswing once you've sat

02:50

into your left side it's again the left

02:52

shoulder's pulling up

02:54

the left torso is pulling up and your

02:56

right side is side bending so again

02:58

if i show you that as i've come in

03:02

now by stretching up my left side left

03:05

torso

03:05

left shoulder that's how you get open

03:07

you don't get open

03:10

by turning this only brings your hip out

03:13

and

03:13

you won't open up at all or anywhere

03:15

near as much as you will

03:17

by stretching up because that pulls

03:20

everything

03:21

open and it gets you into that position

03:23

that we all want to see

03:24

if you looked at that down the line you

03:27

can see there's a gap there between my

03:28

legs

03:29

my torso is quite open again towards you

03:32

guys

03:33

so i'm down then it comes up my right

03:37

side stays down

03:38

and again you can see how much i've

03:40

stretched up this side

03:42

the left side stretching up the right

03:44

side is pushing down

03:46

that motion like so now again if i do

03:49

that at impact

03:50

so up again you'll see

03:54

if i came around you see how much i've

03:56

to get down to the golf ball

03:58

my right side has bent down there

04:01

there's quite a bit of curvature that's

04:03

dropped down the elbow's dropped down

04:05

and the left shoulder's gone up i'm not

04:07

that

04:08

at impact so i've stretched up i'm

04:11

already slightly open with my shoulders

04:13

maybe 10 degrees

04:14

it's my torso is the bit that's open you

04:17

know that might be 30 degrees this could

04:19

be 45 degrees maybe 35 and 45

04:22

so you can see up

04:25

and that's what opens you up and gives

04:27

you the power but your right side must

04:29

stay down you cannot

04:31

everything can't come up so your right

04:33

shoulder can't come up

04:35

and you certainly don't want to get the

04:36

feeling of turning like this

04:38

because this right hip will come out to

04:40

the ball which is powerless

04:42

so you always want to get the feeling up

04:44

and down

04:46

which will require side bend so you

04:49

should practice with quite a bit of side

04:50

bend

04:51

and side bend okay unfortunately that

04:54

will generally make you hit a cut

04:55

you just have to get used to getting the

04:57

wrist in the right place with that side

04:59

bend

05:00

so again up side bend down

05:04

up with the left shoulder side bend down

05:06

with the right that's what the really is

05:08

that's all there is to

05:09

the torso okay

05:12

you do want to separate the hips from

05:14

the torso on the downswing but it's not

05:16

a good idea to try and separate the hips

05:18

from the torso

05:19

it's actually a very natural thing to do

05:21

it's it's

05:23

evolution to separate so somebody who

05:25

gets to the top and tries to spin

05:26

not a good idea they will naturally move

05:29

out away especially if you're getting

05:31

this stretched feeling

05:32

especially if you get basically the

05:34

longest you can get from your left toe

05:36

to your left shoulder

05:37

is is good as long as you have that

05:39

right side bend

05:40

and you're staying down in it and that

05:43

will give you a good powerful position

05:45

and yes you're going to have to match up

05:46

your wrist action to

05:48

counter that because most people when

05:49

they drop down for side bend

05:51

we'll leave the club face open here to

05:52

cut which isn't great for most handicap

05:54

golfers

05:55

but if you're a better player it's

05:56

certainly a position you should be

05:59

getting into again and then getting the

06:02

wrist

06:03

a one good way of doing that just if

06:05

you're looking for a drill first

06:07

you know there's a pecan drill is get a

06:09

golf ball

06:11

take a nice set up and throw the golf

06:13

ball

06:14

so hold your putting your right hand

06:16

right down playing a right-handed golfer

06:18

and throw it into the ground about two

06:19

yards in front of you to go straight

06:21

if i did that down this line you will

06:24

see

06:26

so you can see i've kept my right side

06:28

down to throw it

06:30

and my left side has accelerated up so

06:34

onto the camera here make sure i don't

06:36

hit my camera man you go

06:38

yeah okay so you see i hold my right

06:40

hand

06:41

go to the top and throw it okay

06:45

you can see that's accelerating up

06:48

as that's staying down it's crucial that

06:50

this right side

06:53

right elbow right side stays in the shot

06:55

down there

06:56

as that accelerates up and that's the

06:58

correct motion for your torso

06:59

it's definitely not

07:03

this way at the top and it's definitely

07:05

not

07:06

this way going through it's up

07:10

like if you were punching me into the

07:12

ground punch pull just like that push

07:14

pull

07:15

that's all there is to the torso

07:16

movement and shoulders

Final Thought on Shoulder & Torso Rotation in Your Golf Swing

The more you rotate in your backswing the more you have to unwind in your downswing. At some point it becomes diminishing returns. You have about .25 seconds in your downswing and about a .1 second from left arm parallel. You don't want to have to be making a lot of compensations because you don't have enough time.
