These Top 3 Keys Can Help You Hit Longer Drives

In this video Clay Ballard gives you 3 keys for you to hit longer drives. He'll elaborate on 3 distance killers and how to fix them so you can him BOMBS!

Not only does driving the golf ball farther make the game more fun (we all like letting the big dog eat), but it's been proven to lower scores.

Here's what you will learn:

  • Ball position (this might surprise you)
  • How high to tee the ball up
  • Your compression line

Top 3 Keys to Longer Drives (Transcript)

00:00

now we all want to crush those drives

00:02

dead straight long down the middle of

00:04

the fairway there's a couple things that

00:06

make that nearly impossible if I'm

00:07

teaming the ball up we're about half the

00:09

ball is above my crown just like you see

00:11

here it may make it nearly impossible if

00:14

I swing correctly to not hit thin on the

00:16

bottom of the clubface you're gonna lose

00:18

a lot of distance when you do that same

00:20

thing with my shoulder position if I get

00:23

it too far forward now I'm gonna have to

00:25

lose lag I'm gonna cast I'm going to

00:27

flip and worst of all you're fair your

00:29

drives are going to be inconsistent and

00:31

they're not going to be very far down

00:32

the fairway I'm going to talk about the

00:34

solutions to those and a couple other

00:36

key tricks in this video let's go and

00:38

get started all right so let's jump

00:41

right in hit a couple shots and talk

00:42

about some of these key mistakes that we

00:44

all can make and he's gonna read some of

00:46

our flight scope numbers here on the

00:48

radar so it's gonna be tracking these

00:49

shots number one is going to be the tee

00:51

hike time and time again I see players

00:53

that are setting up the ball with about

00:54

half the ball above the crown of the

00:57

club so meaning that half the ball

00:58

sticking up above this top edge of the

01:01

driver now when that's happening that's

01:03

okay if I'm swinging level or down into

01:06

the golf ball so if I'm kind of hitting

01:07

down into my drives I'm gonna lose some

01:10

distance I'm gonna hit it inconsistent

01:11

but that tee height is about okay if I'm

01:14

hitting down into it so if I had to

01:15

drive you know you know I'm hitting down

01:19

big slicing of the trees lost tons of

01:23

speed and tons of distance I was

01:24

actually able to hit on the top of the

01:26

clubface where I want to but we're going

01:27

to talk about why this is all just a

01:29

giant mess and go through that here in a

01:30

second so first let's look at that first

01:32

swing doing it incorrectly what was my

01:34

clubhead speed what was my distance you

01:35

know what happened on that shot clubhead

01:37

speed was about a hundred distance was

01:39

227 you went down on it 5.9 degrees okay

01:43

so they're driving it incorrectly a

01:46

couple things are going on number one I

01:48

had that ball tee height too low so only

01:52

about half the ball was sticking up over

01:53

my driver head now if you want to hit it

01:55

far if you want to really get that high

01:57

launch you want to be swinging up into

01:59

the ball so there I was kind of chopping

02:01

down into the ball that's one of the

02:03

most common things I see I'd say

02:04

probably 80 or more percent of players

02:06

that I see are hitting down into their

02:08

drives which is not a good thing I want

02:10

to be hitting up into the drives problem

02:13

lies on this ball

02:13

this teahype if I T it up we're just

02:16

half the balls over the crown if my club

02:19

reaches its low point behind the golf

02:21

ball and starts moving up into the golf

02:23

ball which is exactly what we want to be

02:24

doing

02:25

look how now I'd be hitting off the

02:26

bottom of the driver when I hit thin off

02:29

the bottom the driver I'll lose all

02:30

kinds of distance just like we saw there

02:32

I have to make contact on the top half

02:35

of the clubface that's what's going to

02:37

make it launch higher spin less and

02:39

carry a mile so instead of team netball

02:41

half a ball above my driver face I want

02:44

to get a good three-quarters of the ball

02:46

above the driver face so now we can see

02:48

if I make the right kind of swing now I

02:51

can hit up into this golf ball and I

02:53

still have room to hit it on the top

02:56

half of the clubface that makes things a

02:58

lot easier let's go ahead and try one

02:59

there and we're gonna see that I pick up

03:01

a whole lot more distance when I also

03:03

stay behind it and tee it up a little

03:04

bit higher we're gonna get to the second

03:06

part here in just one second all right

03:14

so much better on that one much longer

03:15

right down the middle of fairway not

03:17

quite perfect yet hit that one a little

03:19

bit off the heel but let's go ahead and

03:22

go to the second key here after we talk

03:24

about the numbers on that one so what

03:25

was the stats on that one cube so club

03:28

head speed was 118 total distance 308

03:30

and angle of attack you were hitting up

03:32

on it about 1.3 so hit a little bit up

03:35

on that one another big key there I

03:37

mentioned the second thing is I don't

03:39

want to be sliding in front of this that

03:41

first shot where I just kind of slice it

03:43

off in the woods it wasn't any good I

03:45

was letting my shoulder get up in front

03:48

of my ankle now if you want to hit your

03:50

drives far what you want to do is

03:52

something called the compression line

03:54

and what I mean by this that's it that's

03:56

a term we use in the top speed golf

03:57

system what I mean by this is at impact

04:00

if I was to draw a line from my left

04:04

ankle the center of my left ankle to the

04:07

center of my left shoulder socket that

04:09

would be tilted away from the target

04:11

this would be toward the target I'd be

04:13

chopping down in the ball weak short

04:16

drives this would be away from the

04:18

target hitting up into the ball long

04:20

powerful drives now it's not just that

04:22

I'm away that's helping me hit it up hit

04:24

up on it that's good it's also the

04:26

powerful pose

04:27

I'm in with my body when I get tilted

04:29

away from the target now look how it

04:32

makes a lot of sense where I can have

04:33

this lag and then release that out in

04:36

front of the golf ball if I was up here

04:38

and I had a lot of lag I would swing

04:40

right over top of the golf ball wouldn't

04:42

make sense so from here I can get lag

04:44

release that in the golf ball I'm gonna

04:47

hit a lot farther so here notice on this

04:49

swing my compression line I'm gonna feel

04:51

like as i tee up to or as I set up to

04:54

this golf ball my head is behind the

04:57

golf ball my shoulder is behind my lead

04:59

ankle and I feel like I'm really gonna

05:01

get behind it and let everything release

05:04

out through the golf ball so I'm getting

05:07

my speed in front of the golf ball

05:09

rather than chopping down into the golf

05:11

ball let's go and try that out there we

05:18

go that one was perfect there couldn't

05:21

hit that one much better gonna have a

05:22

positive angle attack I bet and I stayed

05:25

behind that one really nicely what were

05:27

the numbers on that cue so 118 club head

05:30

speed total distance was 323 and angle

05:33

of attack was up three degrees so up

05:35

three degrees that's about perfect there

05:36

so one other last thing here me and Q

05:40

were talking a minute ago and he was

05:41

mentioning something that I thought was

05:42

really interesting to me why don't you

05:44

walk him through what you believe makes

05:47

the most sense to get the third piece

05:48

here which would be ball position so

05:51

where could I go wrong again where we

05:53

don't want to hit down into this we saw

05:54

how bad that can be what do I need to do

05:56

with my ball position to get it get it

05:58

right right so we've often heard that we

05:59

want to play the ball off the inside of

06:01

our lead foot and that can be a fine

06:03

position for a lot of people but what

06:05

happens is we all have different stance

06:07

wits so if you play that ball off the

06:09

inside of your lead foot do a narrow

06:11

stance for me and basically what we want

06:14

to happen is we want this club to bottom

06:15

out and then work up into the golf ball

06:17

and typically where that club is

06:19

bottoming out is about right in your

06:21

armpit there so if you look here if he

06:23

has a narrow stance and he plays that

06:25

ball at the inside of his lead foot on

06:27

that armpit that's basically gonna be it

06:30

might even be a little bit ahead of the

06:31

golf ball depending on my hammock day

06:32

I'm gonna be tough to dup on that from

06:34

from this narrow stance here right you

06:36

gotta fall enough

06:37

I definitely don't want to be doing that

06:39

and if you had a very wide stance now if

06:40

you step that back foot back there you

06:42

go

06:42

yeah play off the inside your foot now

06:44

that armpit might be too far behind the

06:46

ball and the club might be coming in

06:48

bottoming out and then working up into

06:50

the ball and hitting nice or bad thin

06:53

shots so you don't want to get those

06:54

gonna be the really thin ones that

06:56

really balloon up into the air it's kind

06:58

of the other stream I get way back here

06:59

now right I'm gonna almost hit the

07:01

ground or Senate you know right so what

07:04

we really want to do is play that ball

07:06

in relationship to our upper body and I

07:08

found that off the outside of your lead

07:10

shoulder is actually a great way a great

07:13

place to play the ball because that

07:15

allows the club to bottom out about

07:16

where the armpit is and then work up a

07:19

few inches into the golf ball so you can

07:20

get that nice upward angle of attack so

07:23

I get that high launch low spin those

07:24

are the drives that we all want so clay

07:26

how about you hit one here we display

07:28

that really good ball position and see

07:30

what kind of numbers yeah that makes a

07:31

ton of sense to me too because I could

07:32

as long as I keep this in relationship

07:33

to my shoulder I could have my feet

07:35

narrow and I'd still be in a good spot

07:37

to where I could hit up on it I could

07:38

have my feet really wide and maybe the

07:40

ball would look like it's a little

07:41

farther back in my stance but it's still

07:43

in that good position so I like that a

07:45

lot so I'm gonna play off the outside of

07:47

my shoulder I've got the correct tee

07:49

height and I have what's called the

07:51

compression line I'm staying behind the

07:52

golf ball when I put all three of those

07:53

together I'm gonna just in a position

07:56

here to where I can really get a lot of

07:58

lag I can swing through this golf ball

08:00

and get tons of speed and I would be

08:02

pretty consistent while I'm doing that

08:03

let's go ahead and get a shot there we

08:10

go that might have been the best one of

08:11

the several that I've hit what were the

08:13

stats on that one there ki still still

08:16

in the air alright so just came down 117

08:19

club head speed total distance 331

08:21

you're hitting up on it almost six

08:23

degrees yeah so you can see there as I

08:25

started to go up and up more the ball

08:27

flew higher got lower spin and it went a

08:30

heck of a lot longer so follow those

08:32

three keys you're getting it the best

08:33

route of your life now getting the right

08:35

tee height and getting the right ball

08:37

position it's pretty easy we can change

08:38

that in a couple seconds the one piece

08:40

that you might struggle a little bit

08:41

with is getting that right compression

08:44

line getting behind the golf ball if

08:45

you're someone that's slid in front

08:47

forever

08:48

chopping down losing distance that

08:50

compression line is going

08:51

be real gamechanger now I have a video

08:53

that's gonna build on what we talked

08:55

about here it's one of my best

08:56

compression line videos I've ever made

08:57

I'm gonna play a preview that here in a

08:59

second just go ahead and click the card

09:01

that pops up on your screen if you don't

09:03

see that card no problem go down to the

09:05

description down below click on the link

09:06

in the description and you'll get

09:08

instant access I can't wait to see there

09:10

give you some of the secrets of the

09:12

compression line so you'll play your

09:13

best golf fading back creating lag

09:15

releasing lag those are all very very

09:17

important but none of that matters

09:19

unless we can consistently hit that ball

09:22

right on the center of the sweet spot

09:24

and compress this golf ball and that

09:26

really comes down a great deal this

09:27

comes down to how our body is positioned

09:29

at impact and that's what I call the

09:31

compression line and I want to make sure

09:33

that I'm coming down and through hitting

09:35

the ball first every single time now my

09:37

body has to be set up in a proper way to

09:39

be able to do this so when you're coming

09:41

into contact

09:42

I need my left ankle my left hip and my

09:46

left shoulder to all be lined up in a

09:49

straight line hanging back and coming up

09:51

to thin where I'm picking the ball off

09:53

the ground

09:54

maybe flipping or scooping as I'm coming

09:56

through contact my body set up in a way

09:58

where I can deliver the club down into

10:00

the ball every time well the direction

10:01

our shoulders are pointing are gonna

10:03

dictate where we can release the club

10:05

and how we can release the club so

10:07

that's the general overall idea we need

10:09

that compression line it's allowing her

10:11

to release the club and she has one of

10:13

my favorite swings on the LPGA Tour

10:15

really really solid fundamentals and

10:17

again Rory McIlroy here just a great

10:20

swing very very powerful

10:30
