How To Use the Bounce
One of the easiest ways to improve your short game is using the bounce.
When you use the bounce your room for error greatly increases which makes for a more consistent short game. This is crucial to score low consistently in a round of golf.
The easiest way to use the bounce is through the proper set up. Having a more vertical shaft will allow for a shallower approach exposing and using the bounce.
In this video Chris Ryan shows us how it's done.
00:03
hi guys welcome to this Chris Ryan golf
00:05
video we're going to do a video here
00:07
covering a short pitch shot so just off
00:09
the green we're sort of going to carry
00:11
the ball maybe 10 15 20 yards let it
00:14
land and roll out the flag we're going
00:16
to talk about the golf club the
00:18
different parts of the golf club and how
00:19
they interact with the ground when we
00:21
strike the golf ball and when we can use
00:23
these shots from which ones are best for
00:24
certain situations so the two areas the
00:26
golf club we can talk about at the
00:28
leading edge where the sort of the
00:30
clubface meets the sole so this part
00:32
here and then the balance of the golf
00:34
club which is the sole part here where
00:36
the loft would normally be written on
00:37
and we can get certain different bounces
00:40
on that area there so we can have sort
00:41
of low bounce maybe four five six
00:43
degrees right up to about twelve
00:44
thirteen fourteen degrees so the
00:46
different parts of the club we can use
00:48
in different situations for different
00:50
things
00:50
what I would like you to try and do when
00:53
playing these short pictures is try to
00:54
utilize the bounce of the club a lot
00:56
more now the only way we can utilize the
00:58
bounce of the golf club is when the club
01:00
shaft is fairly vertical vertical is
01:02
looking from the camera as soon as we
01:05
start to put some lean towards the golf
01:07
club sorry towards the target
01:08
so the handle gets closer we start to
01:11
bring in the leading edge now the
01:12
leading edge is you can probably see
01:14
from this it's a lot sharper and what
01:16
that's going to do is it's going to dig
01:17
into the ground a lot more and it's
01:18
going to mean that you have to be a lot
01:19
more precise with your contact
01:21
especially in sort of this time of year
01:23
now when the ground conditions are
01:24
changing certainly getting a bit wetter
01:25
if we start to play these shots with a
01:28
forward lean in the golf club bringing
01:30
the leading edge into play if we can if
01:33
we strike the ground slightly too early
01:35
we're going to get the golf club sort of
01:37
digging into the ground and that ball is
01:38
probably not going to go much more than
01:40
a couple of feet so we can get them all
01:42
close with that method but it just means
01:44
we have to be a lot more precise if we
01:46
can start to use the bounce the golf
01:47
club it brings it gives us a lot more
01:48
margin for error it's called the bounce
01:50
because that's exactly what it will do
01:52
as we strike the turf with that part of
01:54
the club it will bounce now generally if
01:58
we're playing with the club shaft a lot
02:00
closer to vertical we will often find
02:03
that the approach is a lot more shallow
02:05
so the golf group is closer to the
02:07
ground prior to impact and then
02:09
obviously under the golf ball at impact
02:11
if we play with a handle for wood you
02:13
tend to get the
02:13
for a very steep position here it comes
02:16
a lot more down there's a lot more
02:17
interaction with the ground and again as
02:19
I've just said that brings a lot more
02:21
miss strikes into play so if we want to
02:24
strike the golf ball with the club shaft
02:27
fairly neutral we should probably start
02:29
there okay there's no point starting
02:30
over here and then trying to return it
02:32
to a different position so with these
02:34
shots here we want to really try and get
02:36
the starting position to mimic the
02:38
impact position as much as we can now my
02:41
personal preference would be to have a
02:42
little bit of weight on the left side so
02:44
I've got a little bit more weight on my
02:45
lead leg and as I take my starting
02:47
position you can see that the shaft is
02:50
fairly close to neutral I know there's a
02:51
little bit of lean towards the target
02:52
but that's okay as long as it's not too
02:54
excessive you should also notice that
02:57
the handle is a little bit forward okay
03:00
it's not way way over here but it's
03:02
definitely not too far back I would
03:03
probably rather have the handle in line
03:05
with the club head or even a little bit
03:07
further back then too far forward okay
03:10
so from this position here we can keep
03:13
the weight on the Left we can just move
03:14
the golf club back and through and we
03:16
can start to use the bounce of the golf
03:18
club what you're going to find is no
03:19
matter what the lie whether it's a tight
03:21
lie sitting down or fluffy grass this
03:23
method will give you a pretty good
03:25
result most times so I'm just going to
03:27
show you a couple of these different
03:28
shots I want you to watch the
03:29
interaction with the ground when I play
03:31
them the first one is with a lot of
03:33
shaft lean this way okay
03:35
and as we strike this golf ball you can
03:40
see there wasn't really any
03:41
follow-through what's over the golf club
03:42
as my golf became quite steeply into the
03:44
golf ball hits the ground no
03:46
follow-through now luckily I managed to
03:48
strike that ball first but I wouldn't
03:50
have had to have been far out and that
03:51
the golf ball would have probably gone
03:52
three or four feet in front of me this
03:54
one going to play it weight on the left
03:57
shaft is a lot more neutral and I'm
04:00
going to try and use the bounce of the
04:02
club and we get a much softer ball
04:07
flight there's no divot and the golf
04:08
club continued through now the added
04:11
benefit with the second one is that
04:13
we're playing with a bit more dynamic
04:14
lock the dynamic loft is the loss that
04:16
we present to the golf ball so not
04:18
necessarily what's written on the bottom
04:19
the golf club but what we actually
04:20
present the golf ball if I play with a
04:22
bit more dynamic loft that's going to
04:24
give me a higher takeoff angle it's
04:26
going to give me a steeper drop angle
04:27
I'm going to get a lot more control over
04:28
the golf ball the first one with a
04:30
handle forward using the leading edge
04:32
the ball is going to come a lot quicker
04:34
get a bit lower ball flight to get the
04:35
land it's going to take off a lot more
04:37
difficult to control
04:38
so for these shots around the green
04:40
these sort of 15 20 yard pitch shots if
04:43
we can start to get ourselves set up
04:45
weight on the left side handle pretty
04:47
much in line with a golf club itself and
04:49
we can start to feel that we use the
04:51
bounce of the club keep the body turning
04:53
and we're going to get some much better
04:55
results if we can do that okay good luck
04:58
give it a go hopefully you'll get some
05:00
closer results

Good chipping tip
Glad you like the tip! This was one of the first vids that really helped me understand how to use the bounce. Simple and effective.
