Covering the golf ball is something we hear on T.V. when announcers are typically describing someone who just had a solid shot.

So what is covering the golf ball and how can we achieve it?

That's what today's video and blog post is all about.

By the way I just discovered Kerrod Gray's YT Channel and he has some excellent tips.

What Is Covering The Golf Ball?

So when you hear a commentator say "he/she really covered the golf ball" they are saying that the player was able to remain their posture and spine angle through the golf swing.

Or you could say "they stayed in the shot."

This leads to compressing the ball for consistent and solid strikes (something we can all use more of).

You'll also avoid the dreaded early extension or standing up through the shot which causes you to flip.

3 Steps You Can Do To Help Cover The Golf Ball

  1.  Move the ball forward. This will make it easier to cover the ball and not get stuck.
  2.  Hips move toward target. Get that weight moving forward and chest slightly down.
  3.  Extend to keep sternum over or slightly behind ball.

Cover The Golf Ball Transcript

00:00

covering the ball it's one of those key

00:02

moves that the professional golfer does

00:04

that most recreational golfers could do

00:06

with a little bit more

00:07

in their golf swings if you feel like

00:09

you're coming up and out of it through

00:11

impact stay tuned

00:12

this video is really going to help let's

00:14

get into it

00:17

[Music]

00:25

00:32

subscribe click that little bell so you

00:33

get notified of all the great content

00:35

coming your way

00:36

in the year ahead alrighty in today's

00:38

lesson we're going to be talking about

00:40

covering the ball it's a principle that

00:42

you'll often hear

00:44

announces on the tv talk about and also

00:46

something that you'll see the

00:47

professional golfer does

00:49

on a regular basis it's also something

00:51

that you'll see a lot of amateur golfers

00:53

really struggle to do so let's talk

00:55

about exactly

00:56

what covering the golf ball is and then

00:58

how you at home can implement that to

01:00

help you

01:01

with your ball striking alrighty so if i

01:03

set up to this golf ball and we were to

01:05

imagine that i swing to the top of my

01:06

backswing

01:07

covering the ball would mean that as we

01:09

move down into the golf ball

01:11

by the time that we were striking the

01:13

golf ball our hips would be

01:14

slightly ahead of the golf ball and the

01:16

center of my sternum

01:17

would be slightly behind we create this

01:20

sort of window from the center of my

01:21

pelvis

01:22

to the center of my sternum where the

01:24

golf ball would lie between and that's

01:25

generally

01:26

what we see with the professional golfer

01:28

that leads to a lot of compression

01:30

and distance now generally on the other

01:32

hand with amateur golfers and

01:33

recreational golfers

01:35

we would see a slight difference to that

01:37

we would see the bottom

01:38

of their golf swing behind we would tend

01:40

to see the mass of their body too far

01:42

behind this point

01:43

and sometimes even their hips and

01:45

that'll lead to these sort of back foot

01:47

shots

01:48

where you'll see the players hanging

01:49

well back through the moment of impact

01:51

and not really finishing forward and up

01:53

on their foot

01:54

so first of all let's talk about some of

01:56

the reasons why this may be happening

01:58

well first of all

01:59

it could be conceptual could be for the

02:01

fact that you as a golfer

02:03

don't have an understanding that the

02:05

golf swing is an athletic dynamic

02:07

movement

02:07

towards our target out in front of you

02:10

and in doing so

02:11

we need to shift our pressure and our

02:13

mass towards the target

02:14

so everything finishes in the direction

02:16

we want to send the golf ball

02:18

a lot of players are under the

02:19

perception that they need to simply just

02:22

swing down and hit a golf ball down on

02:24

the ground and when you do that

02:25

your body's not moving towards the

02:27

target and that's going to cause you to

02:29

not cover the ball

02:30

as well secondary a lot of the time

02:33

players in an attempt to get more of a

02:35

downward strike on the golf ball

02:36

in an attempt to get this compression

02:38

that they hear about this shaft lean

02:40

this angle getting a divot in front

02:43

they tend to place the ball too far back

02:45

in your stance and this is one of the

02:47

big

02:47

issues that we see of a lot of

02:48

recreational golfers and it causes them

02:51

to actually do the opposite to what

02:52

they're trying to do

02:53

so in this video here we're going to

02:55

elaborate a little bit more on that

02:56

and show you where the ball position

02:58

should be so you have an optimal chance

03:00

of actually covering that golf ball so

03:03

if i for example was to set up with this

03:05

stick in the center of my stance

03:07

let's assume that this was beneath the

03:09

center of my pelvis and also beneath the

03:11

center

03:12

of my sternum now covering the ball as

03:14

we discussed earlier

03:15

would be when the hips are slightly

03:17

forward or the center of the hips are

03:19

slightly forward at the ball

03:20

and the sternum is slightly behind

03:22

however if we start with the ball

03:24

position too far

03:25

back what happens is impact in reality

03:29

if we look at all the best golfers in

03:30

the world

03:31

is actually further in front so what

03:33

happens with the player

03:35

who positions their golf ball too far

03:36

back in their stance

03:38

they'll shift forward thinking they're

03:39

doing the correct thing but you can see

03:41

the actual center of my pelvis in the

03:43

center of my sternum is too far in front

03:45

and that gets the golf club moving on

03:46

too steep over a downward attack the

03:48

shaft will tend to get too steep and as

03:50

a result what happens

03:52

is the body then reacts by jumping up

03:54

you'll find the upper body backs up and

03:56

out of it

03:56

and will lose these angles coming into

03:58

the ball leading to that bunched up look

04:01

and a lot of thin shots down the fairway

04:03

that kind of look like this through the

04:05

ball not much power through the golf

04:06

ball and as you can see

04:07

definitely no divot as a result so when

04:10

we're looking to get this

04:11

optimal covering of the golf ball if

04:13

you're a player who's struggling to take

04:16

divots well this is key here

04:17

we need to get ball position correct

04:20

first of all

04:21

so general sense of reference if we can

04:23

get a short to mid iron so let's say

04:25

i've got an 8 iron in my hand now

04:27

i want a comfortable club head distance

04:29

between my lead foot

04:31

and where that ball would be positioned

04:33

and we're using this yellow stick down

04:34

on the ground as a reference for that

04:36

from there as i set up to it ideally

04:38

what we would like to see

04:40

is our left ear on top of that point the

04:42

reason we use our left ear

04:44

is that as a reference for our upper

04:45

body and generally by this stage here we

04:48

can see that we've got

04:49

a little bit more weight on the lead

04:50

side that helps with the dynamic

04:52

movement of the swing

04:53

but is also going to encourage you to

04:55

compress the golf ball

04:57

what we see with the best players in the

04:58

world as we were discussing before

05:00

is they have this movement from the top

05:02

of the swing down into the ball

05:04

and if we have that ball too far back

05:05

you've got nowhere to go

05:07

your body's going to react and jump out

05:08

of it and you get that bunched up look

05:10

so starting with the ball position a

05:12

little bit further forward is going to

05:14

be an imperative step to help you

05:16

get a little bit more of that

05:17

compression so once we get

05:19

this ball position a little bit further

05:21

forward in the address position we want

05:22

to keep our head

05:24

relatively stable to the top if you drew

05:26

a circle

05:27

around my head and it's a dress position

05:29

as i swing and turn to the top we want

05:31

to keep that head

05:32

relatively centered as we move down into

05:35

the golf ball

05:36

the lower body would shift the head

05:38

would move down and forward slightly

05:40

and as we make impact we would want to

05:41

get the center of that pelvis slightly

05:44

in front and the center of the sternum

05:46

slightly behind we create this little

05:48

window

05:49

where the golf ball would be situated in

05:51

and that right there that is covering

05:53

the ball

05:53

so what we want to do is we want to

05:55

start off with a couple of small swings

05:56

just getting a sense

05:57

starting off with checking the ball

05:59

position wait a little bit further

06:01

forward let's do some little half swings

06:02

down there

06:06

so that one as you can see ball contact

06:09

first divot second

06:10

my hips and everything was moving

06:12

forward my upper body was extending and

06:13

finished nice

06:14

and once you get a feeling at a slow

06:16

speed what you want to do is you want to

06:18

gradually

06:19

build that up if you're someone who has

06:21

had this ball position too far back

06:23

you've been jumping out and away from it

06:25

you've been trying to scoop well this is

06:27

going to feel a little bit different

06:28

after we've done that once again check

06:31

your ball position wait for it

06:32

from here we're going to add a little

06:34

bit more speed let's see how we go

06:39

so that one there that was a full 8 iron

06:41

came off with a lot of power and you can

06:42

see once again

06:44

relative to where the ball was situated

06:45

at address we took a nice little divot

06:47

after that right there that is

06:48

compression and that is covering the

06:50

golf ball

06:51

so if you're a player who is struggling

06:53

to get this sort of divot after the golf

06:55

ball

06:55

you feel like your body's jumping out

06:58

there's a good chance you're doing one

06:59

of two errors you're either

07:01

got too much of an intentional hit down

07:03

at the golf ball and you're not moving

07:04

towards the target

07:06

or secondary your ball position is too

07:07

far back in your stance and if it's too

07:09

far back

07:09

you're going to lose the angles because

07:11

your brain is going to work overtime

07:12

to try and make sure you're not going to

07:14

dig that golf club into the ground

07:16

so try these principles out let's get

07:17

that golf ball a little bit further

07:18

forward at address

07:19

and get the feeling of the hips and

07:21

upper body moving towards the target

07:23

and finishing tall when you finish so i

07:25

hope you've enjoyed today's video if you

07:27

got any questions as always please ask

07:29

me below

07:30

but until next time i'm cara gray thanks
