Re-Centering Your Golf Swing is Key
You ever watch a pro and think... "that was so smooth" when they swing a club? Then see the ball fly off the clubhead like a heat seeking missile. I believe it's because they're re-centering in the golf swing.
The team at Athletic Motion Golf has done quite a few videos on this using GEARS. So this has been measured and there is no denying that it happens.
It's this re-centering motion during the backswing that makes the golf swing look so smooth and effortless.
00:00
sean we're out here beautiful day long
00:02
par four carsville country club and
00:05
there's a term that we coined a few
00:06
years back called recentering and it's a
00:08
question we get all the time and you're
00:09
definitely gonna want to do it
00:11
if you want to hit more fairways and
00:13
farther down the fairway
00:14
like a hole here in this video we're
00:16
going to show you how to do it with all
00:17
your clothes
00:20
[Music]
00:24
we've talked about re-centering for a
00:26
while now we talked about the importance
00:28
of not only
00:29
allowing your body to move laterally to
00:31
the right but also of course back to the
00:33
left
00:34
and we see an every great swing we've
00:35
looked at on gears we see it in the
00:37
force data
00:39
but swaying has got to be kind of a
00:41
dirty word right
00:42
over the over the past handful of years
00:45
and i think a big part of it is
00:46
golfers get themselves in trouble when
00:49
the timing of that movement is off
00:51
and a good indication of what we see is
00:53
a golfer who will try
00:55
not to sway right they're at set up
00:58
they're moving into the back swing and
01:00
then somewhere near the end of the
01:02
backswing they realize they got to
01:03
generate
01:04
some sort of athletic motion and then
01:06
they bounce to the right
01:07
and then they're basically starting
01:09
their downswing from deep into the right
01:10
side
01:11
yeah they they know i think kind of
01:13
instinctively they need some kind of
01:15
momentum so they get they try to stay
01:17
really locked in
01:18
they're gonna move anyway but they're
01:19
doing it at the wrong time they try to
01:21
do it as the club finishes they go to
01:22
the right
01:23
and it destroys any kind of good
01:25
sequencing they would have had
01:26
yeah you're exactly right and you know
01:28
golfers oftentimes will think it's an
01:30
either or proposition
01:32
i can either move laterally or i can
01:33
rotate everyone likes to rotate
01:35
but when you actually look at what good
01:37
golfers do we have yet to see a
01:39
professional golfer
01:41
who doesn't rotate while they're moving
01:43
laterally
01:44
right the two are always coexisting and
01:46
again it's when you do it it makes all
01:48
the difference
01:49
so we're going to show you a couple real
01:51
world examples here
01:52
and we're going to look at john rom
01:54
first and what we're going to do is put
01:56
a line
01:57
right down the side of both legs
02:01
we're going to demonstrate what we
02:02
talked about for a long time the
02:04
re-centering aspect of the golf swing
02:06
and you'll see very clearly in this
02:08
swing here
02:09
as he gets moving in the backswing you
02:11
can see that initial bump to the right
02:14
right we see it all the time and it
02:15
usually happens
02:17
somewhere in the first foot or so of the
02:18
backswing yeah as soon as that club
02:20
start moving
02:22
the golfers that we see at playing at a
02:24
high level are moving to the rights or
02:26
away from the target slightly
02:27
and it happens really early in the
02:29
backswing right so this little gap that
02:31
he starts with his
02:32
outside of his right leg is immediately
02:35
closed
02:36
and then john's got a typically or a
02:38
shorter swing than
02:40
most pros have so he'll start to
02:42
recenter
02:43
early and then right here
02:46
he's back between those two red
02:50
lines like he was where he started he's
02:52
equal space between those two red lines
02:54
and that's the
02:54
very desonate definition of being
02:56
centered i think the key
02:58
point to make here is that he moves to
03:00
the right
03:01
early right and as he's finishing his
03:04
turn
03:04
close or his backswing rotation as he's
03:08
doing that
03:08
that's when he makes that re-centering
03:10
move back to the middle so he's
03:11
turning in the backward direction to
03:13
finish the backswing
03:15
and shifting toward the target a little
03:16
bit and that's the part i think people
03:18
uh have trouble with it's it's such a
03:21
huge point to drive home
03:23
is golfers always associate rightward
03:25
movement as backswing
03:27
leftward movement or forward movement as
03:29
downswing
03:30
both are happening in the backswing or
03:32
should be happening when when his hips
03:34
are still
03:35
closing he's already started shifting
03:38
forward
03:39
and then by the time he does shift
03:41
forward or
03:42
his arms do come down he's well into his
03:45
forward
03:46
shift it's not starting his forward
03:47
shift there and that's
03:49
undoubtedly one of the most common i
03:52
would say
03:53
causes for issues we see in typical
03:55
amateur golf swings yeah they they
03:56
associate
03:57
the forward motion with forward rotation
04:00
so as soon as they make any kind of
04:01
lateral back toward the target they
04:03
start to fire the hips
04:04
in reality you you know you want this
04:06
shift turn
04:07
shift turn motion in the swing that
04:10
first shift
04:10
shift happens then you make the
04:12
backswing turn then you make the shift
04:14
back toward the middle then you turn
04:15
again and if you can remember that
04:17
shift turn shift turn you'll be on the
04:18
right track exactly right now let's take
04:20
a look at another golfer so we're going
04:21
to see
04:22
another really clear example this time
04:24
when the driver is we're always asking
04:26
okay does this apply to a driver does it
04:27
supply to an iron
04:29
both apply equally here so we're going
04:31
to look at xander
04:33
get another smaller golfer now but
04:36
very powerful golfer and you're going to
04:37
see why one of the reasons why
04:41
and using these lines when you record
04:43
your swing
04:44
get used to putting these lines outside
04:46
of each leg you're going to learn a lot
04:48
about your golf swing
04:49
relative to your weight shift by doing
04:50
that so as xander gets started you can
04:53
see
04:54
a big movement to the right and this is
04:56
very common with
04:57
many of the top players in the world
04:59
yeah they get that early shift off the
05:01
ball gets that momentum started in the
05:03
correct direction
05:04
then as the club starts making its way
05:05
over his head you're going to see what
05:06
happens next which is that little
05:08
re-centering move and a little bit of a
05:09
side track but that's a pet peeve of
05:11
ours
05:12
we see so many golfers trying to avoid
05:14
this world-class movement off the ball
05:16
and again
05:17
this is something whether you're three
05:19
years old or 300 years old you can make
05:21
this movement
05:23
right here in the golf swing it takes
05:24
next to zero athleticism to do it
05:26
but we see so many people trying to
05:28
avoid it because
05:30
or in an effort to simplify a movement
05:33
and you
05:34
we're all for simplification but you can
05:36
simplify and strip away a movement
05:39
so much to where you're actually now
05:41
you're hurting yourself
05:42
it takes away all the athleticism right
05:44
and that initial move away
05:45
on the backswing that's that's the kind
05:47
of the start of making any kind of
05:50
athletic movement
05:51
if you're throwing a baseball or right
05:52
or hitting a baseball or any of those
05:55
kind of sports there's a shift
05:57
before you go forward and golf is no
05:59
different it's just
06:00
when you do it in the amounts that make
06:02
it work and if you're doing it at the
06:04
wrong time it will totally destroy
06:06
emotion we record hundreds of golfers
06:08
throwing a ball
06:10
right just standing there throwing a
06:11
ball on the forest plates and yeah 100
06:14
of them make a movement back they don't
06:16
even think about it
06:17
right we can simplify just you think of
06:19
it just a simple
06:20
movement of a jump we can simplify a
06:23
jump by not lowering ourselves that
06:24
would simplify
06:25
but you just wouldn't jump very high you
06:27
wouldn't be very explosive in the golf
06:29
swing if you took away this movement
06:30
yeah these guys are
06:32
obviously now having to hit it farther
06:33
and farther they're they're not cutting
06:35
off that initial lateral movement
06:36
because it adds speed to the motion
06:38
it's the springboard for that forward
06:40
and the more we look at these
06:41
force plates that we have the more we
06:43
realize how important that first little
06:44
move away is it sets up all the ground
06:46
forces
06:47
all right so here he is going up near
06:49
the top now
06:51
you can see right here as the weight of
06:52
that club starts to swing back over his
06:54
head
06:55
he is boom right there re-centered and
06:57
that's about
06:59
as dynamic and as on time re-centering
07:02
as you can do
07:03
in the golf swing and it's no wonder he
07:06
is a long hitter especially for the size
07:10
he is and the speed he's able to
07:11
generate is quite impressive
07:12
there's no holding back there no no he's
07:15
not avoiding
07:16
or trying to avoid any lateral movement
07:18
he's taking advantage of the lateral
07:20
movement
07:20
so he can really explode into the golf
07:22
ball and we'll show you the gears
07:24
version of this
07:25
here as well and you're going to see
07:28
something it's a pretty textbook example
07:32
of what you're looking for so right here
07:33
at the bottom is the sway number
07:36
and here's something we've never shown
07:37
before this is the shoulder sway number
07:39
so a three dimensional dot right between
07:42
the shoulders okay and the
07:44
three-dimensional jot
07:45
right in the center of the pelvis so
07:47
these two numbers
07:48
will start they also always start at
07:50
zero and once the golfer starts moving
07:52
they'll move
07:53
you can see here this golfer the
07:56
winner out there on tour he shifts the
07:59
average is right around one to one and a
08:00
half
08:01
inches shift away from the target he's
08:04
right there in the middle of that range
08:05
and then immediately
08:07
pretty much right after the takeaway you
08:09
can see how that starts to drift
08:11
back now video wise you wouldn't see
08:13
much movement at all
08:15
right this is always happening before
08:17
you actually see the movement
08:19
and then by the time he gets to the top
08:21
of his swing he is
08:23
literally back to zero zero you can see
08:26
as that club was finishing as it was
08:27
going back toward the target the club
08:29
head
08:30
right over his head that's when he makes
08:31
that little shift back to where he
08:33
started
08:34
that's pretty classic and then of course
08:35
you see the the completion of that shift
08:38
forward
08:38
it comes down into impact it's just a
08:41
very dynamic way
08:42
to swing it's a very natural athletic
08:45
way you do this every time you throw a
08:46
ball
08:47
without ever thinking about it i think
08:49
just because the ball is sitting there
08:51
still
08:52
you start from a still position and it
08:53
kind of makes things awkward
08:55
but we're going to show you uh here in
08:57
the warehouse
08:58
how to add this dynamic movement to your
09:01
golf swing
09:02
and do it in time so you can actually
09:03
start to hit the ball with a lot more
09:05
dynamic dynamics dynamicism dynamics
09:08
close enough
09:10
more athleticism hit it a lot farther
09:13
and a lot more accurately
09:15
all right so we got our old faithful
09:16
chef that board here and our good buddy
09:18
mark chef that makes these and
09:19
we'll put a link down below how you can
09:20
get one but this is a great little
09:23
training aid basically to teach you how
09:25
to recenter and the timing of the
09:26
recentering because
09:27
basically do it on a seesaw so we're
09:29
gonna put sean seesaw down here on the
09:31
ground yeah
09:32
and sean has a really
09:35
super valuable way of teaching yourself
09:37
how to feel this
09:38
yeah so what i have people do is take a
09:41
an iron
09:42
and grip it under the head so it this
09:44
end gets really light you got kind of a
09:45
counterweight right
09:47
put your lead hand on your trail
09:49
shoulder this is important because
09:51
when we first started doing this guys
09:53
would just leave their arm out and they
09:54
were just
09:55
raising the arm they weren't really
09:57
turning this kind of makes you turn yeah
09:58
this this gives you the sense that you
09:59
got to move the body and the arm like
10:01
you would in a normal swing with two
10:03
hands
10:03
the reason i like it with one hand
10:05
though is it gives you a better sense
10:07
of the timing of when the shift happens
10:09
it's a little difficult at first with
10:11
two hands if you haven't done it
10:12
just because it complicates it a little
10:14
bit yeah it's more like a throwing
10:15
motion though yeah
10:16
it really turns on your kind of
10:18
athleticism and the feel of that
10:20
and the timing really gets more natural
10:22
with just one hand okay
10:24
so so to start with we want to start
10:26
with the left side down and the club out
10:28
in front
10:29
yeah so left side down club here
10:32
okay and the motion is click
10:36
swing click swing all right so
10:39
said something very important there it
10:41
was start with on the left
10:44
click it early click it still in the
10:46
back swing yeah
10:47
click and it's not a big mass shove or
10:51
that's the big deal tipping this way a
10:52
bunch it's just click swing
10:54
click swing so i'm moving pressure
10:56
learning to move pressure without a big
10:58
mass
10:58
movement now the the important thing and
11:01
i think this is probably
11:03
whenever we get golfers on these in
11:04
lessons for the first time
11:07
always we will see a click everybody
11:10
gets that first click
11:13
click right it's it's two the clicks are
11:16
in the backswing
11:17
yeah they need to be yes it's click
11:20
swing as i'm still making the backswing
11:22
motion i
11:22
click it down then i hit and i like what
11:25
you said that it's not just
11:27
throwing this around or trying to slide
11:29
forward to lower that
11:30
balance yourself there in the middle
11:32
yeah it's tough to do right really tight
11:35
just drop one side lower the other so
11:37
you can move this board without really
11:39
throwing your body around and that's the
11:41
mentality you want to start taking into
11:42
your swing is i don't really want to
11:43
move too
11:44
much mass there's some especially on the
11:46
downswing but the idea of
11:49
getting that pressure over there so i
11:50
can kind of hit against that
11:52
is the feeling you want so this is what
11:54
we talk about all the time when you
11:55
shift your pressure
11:56
at the right timing you have much more
11:58
time in the downswing
11:59
and by having this left side down in the
12:01
backswing
12:02
i'm now done in the downswing i'm just
12:05
turning and posting on that lead leg
12:07
rather than trying to shift to it on the
12:09
boundaries and that's what we've learned
12:10
a lot from these gas plates is
12:12
when when should that foot be down when
12:13
should you start pushing
12:15
in order to get the clubhead speed into
12:16
the ball and
12:18
it needs to happen earlier so you can
12:20
push earlier and let that happen
12:21
yeah these vertical forces have got a
12:23
spike when
12:24
when the club's pretty much vertical
12:26
coming down yeah so it reaches vertical
12:28
about right here
12:28
most guys well you better be kind of
12:30
positioned
12:32
with pressure on the left foot and your
12:33
body in a position where you can stretch
12:35
this left side out and spike the
12:37
pressure
12:38
and then this gets we'll get maximum
12:39
speed yeah because a lot of you out
12:40
there
12:41
are not you're not even getting back to
12:43
50 50
12:44
until that peak is supposed to be
12:46
occurring so you're just way late and
12:48
you're missing out on a lot of potential
12:49
club head speed
12:50
so get yourself a board teach yourself
12:53
the proper timing of it go slow put the
12:56
club upside down
12:57
both clicks in the back swing and then a
12:59
down swing and i think you're going to
13:00
really start to see this transfer to
13:01
your swing out on the course

Re-Centering Tip for Your Golf Swing
The great thing about re-centering is if you start your pressure shift early then the ground reaction forces will push you back, but you have to be patient and finish your turn.
One thing that really helps... as you shift your pressure and turn push your trail foot towards 1-2 O'clock (for right handed golfers). This force will not only help you turn your trail hip but also as you finish your turn re-center your body and pressure during the backswing.
Do You Re-center Your Golf Swing?
Have you tried re-centering in your golf swing? I believe this simple move can help you create a single motion golf swing that is smooth and consistent.
Too often we look at the golf swing as parts (i.e. takeaway, backswing, transition, downswing, etc...) and it makes it a rigid motion.
Re-centering makes it more athletic and instinctive. Let us know in the comments below if you've tried re-centering your golf swing.
Good info never had that thought. Do you have anything on single plane swing
Thanks for commenting. Yes, I do… I actually did a webinar with Moe Norman’s protege Todd Graves who runs the Single Plane Academy. You can watch that here: https://upglove.com/single-swing-plane-in-golf-video/
Nice write-up. Recently, I ended up repositioning my trailing foot as described in your article as a result of some experimentation; I discovered that placing it between 1 and 2 o’clock, especially with the driver, allows me to rotate more on the backswing. It also allows my weight to shift forward on the insides of my feet more on the downswing. Since it would appear that I’m following rudiments of your “re-centering technique”, I think I’ll take it all the way and work with your technique on the range today. Thanks!
Thanks Billy! Yes, I think that will definitely give you more ability to turn especially when you apply pressure towards 1-2 o’clock. One thing to note… You want a useful turn. If you turn too much you might not have enough time on the downswing and your impact will suffer. It’s always a balance. Enjoy the range!
